Story
Founded in 1975, the Mugaya washing station sits in the highlands near Kagumo town in Kirinyaga — one of ten stations run by the Mutira cooperative, doing the same work in the same place for nearly half a century. Around 1,700 smallholders deliver cherry from holdings averaging 0.1 hectares, closer to a garden than a farm, where maize, beans and vegetables grow among the coffee. The processing is Kenyan washed by the book. Fermentation runs about a day before the mucilage is rinsed with clean river water, then the parchment soaks a further six hours and dries slowly on African beds. That soak is where Mugaya's clarity comes from.
