Ethiopia is the origin of the world's coffee varieties, the ‘home of coffee’ tied to the legend of the magic cherry. Its vast diversity — some 6,000–10,000 varieties — yields different flavours by region, village and farm, the core of Ethiopian coffee's appeal. From Yirgacheffe's florals to Harrar's ripe fruit, regional character has made Ethiopia the heart of specialty coffee over the past decade. This lot, selected by the Guji producer cooperative Kayon Mountain, was processed at the Ismael Hassen family washing station in Shakiso. Cherries from smallholders across Guji are purchased and processed; this lot comes from the Genet kebele of Hambela Wamena at up to 2,300m. The local landrace varieties, descended from wild coffee, bring outstanding genetic diversity and complex flavour.
